Does It Snow in Dehradun? Where to Find Snow Near the City, and When
The short answer is no, not in the city. The longer answer is that dependable snow sits an hour or two up the road from late December to February. A local's guide to where the snow line actually is, when it falls, how to time a snow day and why the valley is the warmest place to sleep.
In short
Dehradun city sits at about 640 metres, and it does not get snow. Winter nights here fall to about 4 to 7°C with fog, while afternoons stay sunny at 18 to 22°C. The snow starts about 1,800 metres up: Mussoorie (35 km, about an hour and a quarter from Rajpur Road) sees a handful of snow days most winters, Dhanaulti and Kanatal (two to two and a half hours) hold snow for days, and Chakrata is the quiet alternative. The window is late December to mid-February, with the best odds in January. Base in the valley, watch the forecast and drive up on the clear morning after a cold spell.

It is the question we get most on WhatsApp from about the first week of December: does it snow in Dehradun? The honest answer is no, not in the city, and we would rather you heard that from us than found out on arrival. The better news is that the snow line is close. Dehradun is the warm, sunny base at the bottom of the hill, and the snow is an hour or two up the road. Here is how it actually works, from people who live at the bottom of that hill.
Why Dehradun itself stays snow-free
Dehradun sits in the Doon valley at roughly 640 metres above sea level, between the Shivalik hills and the first wall of the Himalaya. Snow in this part of Uttarakhand needs altitude, and the line where it settles sits at about 1,800 to 2,000 metres in a normal winter, dropping lower only in the sharpest cold spells. The valley never gets there. In January, the coldest month, nights fall to about 4 to 7°C and afternoons recover to 18 to 22°C of clear sun (our month by month weather guide has every month). What Dehradun gets instead is fog: thick until mid-morning from about 20 December to mid-January, then a gold, cloudless afternoon.
The one footnote: in a rare cold spell a dusting of snow can reach the upper slopes above Rajpur, around Jharipani and the lower Mussoorie road at about 1,400 metres. It makes the local news precisely because it is so unusual, and it is gone by lunchtime. Do not plan a trip around it.
The snow ladder: where the snow starts, and how far
Think of the road up from Dehradun as a ladder. Every rung is colder, snowier and quieter than the last, and every one of them is a day trip from our homes.
- Mussoorie (about 2,000 m, 35 km, an hour and a quarter from Rajpur Road): the nearest snow. A handful of falls most winters between late December and February. Snow in town melts in a day or two; Landour, Lal Tibba and the Camel's Back loop hold it longer. Our Mussoorie and Landour day plan has the route and timings.
- Dhanaulti (2,286 m, about two and a half hours): the dependable one. Several snowfalls a winter, and it lasts for days under the deodars at the Eco Park. This is where we send guests who have promised their children snow. The Dhanaulti and Kanatal snow day guide is the full playbook.
- Kanatal and Surkanda Devi (2,590 m and about 2,750 m): half an hour past Dhanaulti, higher, colder and emptier. The Surkanda Devi ropeway runs when the weather allows, and the temple ridge is the best snow view on the whole road.
- Chakrata (about 2,100 m, three to three and a half hours): the quiet alternative to the west, with deodar forest, Deoban and Tiger Falls below. Snow in January and February most years, and far fewer cars. See our Chakrata and Tiger Falls guide; Indian visitors need photo ID and foreign nationals generally need prior permission.
- Auli (about 2,800 m and up, 280 km, a full day's drive): the only place on this list with guaranteed snow and skiing, and the only one that is not a day trip from Dehradun. Treat it as a separate two or three night trip.

When it snows: the calendar
- November: no snow anywhere on the ladder in a normal year, but the clearest Himalayan views and the first winterline sunsets. See Dehradun in November.
- December: the first falls at Dhanaulti and Kanatal usually arrive in the last ten days, sometimes right on Christmas week. Mussoorie's first dusting is possible but not promised. Our December guide covers the Christmas and New Year rush.
- January: the best odds everywhere on the ladder. Two or three snow spells is a typical month, each lasting a day or two of falling snow and then several clear, bright days with snow on the ground above 2,000 metres. Dehradun in January has the month in full.
- February: still good, especially the first half. Late February snow is heavier and wetter and melts fast; by March the ladder is green again except on the highest ridges.
How to do a snow day from Dehradun
- 1.Leave by 7:30 am. The Mussoorie road is clear and empty early, and the light on fresh snow is best before eleven. By noon on a snow weekend the climb from Kuthal Gate can crawl.
- 2.Hire a local taxi rather than driving yourself. The road to Dhanaulti is narrow and shaded, and ice sits on the bends for days after a fall. Local drivers know which stretches freeze. We can arrange a car and driver on WhatsApp.
- 3.Check the road. After a heavy fall the Mussoorie to Dhanaulti road can close for a few hours while it is cleared. Mussoorie itself almost never closes.
- 4.Pack for two climates. It can be 18°C in the valley and below freezing at Surkanda Devi on the same afternoon: thermals, a proper jacket, gloves, a cap and shoes with grip, plus sunglasses, because snow glare is fierce.
- 5.Come down before dark. Sunset is around 5:30 pm in January and the temperature on the ridge drops fast afterwards. Dinner back in the valley is warm, cheap and twenty minutes from a café.
Why the valley is the right place to sleep
Snow is wonderful to visit and miserable to wake up in. Ridge-top hotels in Mussoorie and Dhanaulti double or triple their rates for snow weekends, water pipes freeze, and power cuts are routine. Down in Dehradun you sleep at 10°C or more, wake to a sunny morning, and drive up in an hour. All six Starfish homes run room heaters and winter-weight duvets, with hot water, full kitchens, free parking and self check-in, from ₹1,800 a night plus taxes (prices vary by date). Our winter guide has the rest of the season's playbook, and the homestay versus hotel comparison explains why a kitchen matters when it is cold outside.

Quick answers
- Does it snow in Dehradun city?
- No. Dehradun lies at about 640 metres in the Doon valley, and winter temperatures stay above freezing, with lows of about 4 to 7°C in January. The city gets fog and cold mornings, not snow. In an exceptional cold spell a dusting can reach the upper slopes above Rajpur, around Jharipani on the Mussoorie road, but it is gone by lunchtime.
- Where is the nearest snow to Dehradun?
- Mussoorie, about 35 km and an hour and a quarter from Rajpur Road, is the nearest place that sees snow, usually a few falls between late December and February. For snow you can rely on, carry on to Dhanaulti (2,286 m, about two and a half hours from Dehradun), where it settles for days after a cold spell.
- When does it snow in Mussoorie?
- The window runs from late December to mid-February, with January the most likely month. Snow in Mussoorie town usually melts within a day or two, while Landour and Lal Tibba, a few hundred metres higher, hold it longer. Snow follows a western disturbance, so a day or two of winter rain in Dehradun is the signal to go up the next clear morning.
- Is snow guaranteed at Dhanaulti in winter?
- Nearly, but not on a fixed date. Dhanaulti sits at 2,286 m and gets several snowfalls most winters, and the snow lasts for days in the shade of the deodar forest. Plan a flexible day between late December and mid-February and go on the first clear morning after snow is reported, rather than booking a fixed date months ahead.
