Dehradun in December: Christmas, New Year and the Snow Question
Crisp blue mornings, Landour's Christmas bakeries, New Year's Eve on the ridge and the one question every guest asks: will we see snow? A local's guide to the Doon valley's most requested month, with honest odds, prices and a day-by-day plan.
In short
December in Dehradun means sunny 20°C afternoons, cold 5 to 7°C nights, morning fog after the 20th and the clearest Himalayan views of the year. Snow does not fall in the city itself; Mussoorie gets an occasional dusting in late December and Dhanaulti, 60 km up, is the reliable place for it. Christmas week and New Year's Eve are the year's peak: ridge hotels double or triple their rates, so book early or sleep in the warm valley and drive up for the day.

December is the month our guests plan around most, and the month with the most questions. Will it snow? How cold is it really? Is Christmas in Mussoorie worth the crowds? Here is the straight version from the valley floor, where we watch the winterline light up over the ridge every evening from the first week of the month.
What December actually feels like
Think bright and dry rather than bleak. The valley wakes cold, around 6°C, warms to a golden 20°C by lunch and cools fast once the sun drops behind the Shivaliks at five. Rain is rare, skies stay clear, and the Himalayan snow peaks show themselves nearly every morning from the Mussoorie road. After the 20th, fog often sits on the valley until ten o'clock; it burns off into the finest afternoons of the year. The month by month weather guide has the full numbers.
The snow question, answered honestly
- Dehradun city: no snow, ever. Frost on the car some mornings, nothing more.
- Mussoorie and Landour: a dusting in perhaps one December in three, usually between Christmas and New Year, and it melts by afternoon. January and February are better bets.
- Dhanaulti and Kanatal: the dependable choice, 2 to 2.5 hours from the valley. Snow arrives with the first strong western disturbance, often in the last week of December, and lingers in the deodar shade. Our snow day playbook has the timings.
- The winterline: the real December spectacle. That band of orange and violet above the horizon at sunset is seen from Mussoorie and from the valley, and it is at its best from mid-December. Details in the winter guide.
Christmas and New Year on the ridge
Landour does Christmas beautifully: carols at the old churches, the bakeries at Char Dukan and Sisters Bazaar selling plum cake and cinnamon rolls, fairy lights along the lanes. Mall Road on New Year's Eve is a different animal, packed solid with day-trippers from Delhi and Chandigarh, bonfires and music at the hotels, traffic jammed at Kuthal Gate until well past midnight. Both are worth doing once. Neither is worth paying triple to sleep beside.

Why the valley is the smart December base
Ridge hotels raise prices from around the 22nd and often triple them for the 31st, with minimum-stay rules on top. Down in the valley, our six homes hold their normal rates, run heaters and winter duvets, have full kitchens for a slow Christmas breakfast, and put Mussoorie 35 minutes away for the evening you choose. Guests do Christmas lunch in Landour, drive back down before the roads ice, and wake to a clear valley morning. Our Mussoorie homestay guide covers when the ridge does win.
A four-day December plan
- 1.Day 1, arrival: settle into the valley, sunset winterline from the Mussoorie road viewpoints, dinner on Rajpur Road.
- 2.Day 2, Mussoorie and Landour: up by 9, Landour bakery walk, Camel's Back at golden hour, down by 7 pm before the cold bites.
- 3.Day 3, snow or river: if snow has fallen, Dhanaulti. If not, Rishikesh for the Ganga aarti, 45 km the other way. See the 100 km shortlist.
- 4.Day 4, slow valley day: Robber's Cave or FRI in the morning sun, cafe hopping in the afternoon, an early night before the drive home.
December rewards the guests who plan it well: clear skies, quiet valley mornings, a ridge festival within reach and, with a little luck and a good forecast, snow underfoot an hour and a half from bed. Pack warm, book early, and let the valley do the rest.
Quick answers
- Is December a good time to visit Dehradun?
- Yes, for many people it is the best month: dry, bright days around 20°C, crisp air, the winterline glowing over Mussoorie at sunset and the snow peaks sharp on the horizon. Pack for cold nights, expect fog on late-December mornings, and book ahead if your dates touch Christmas or New Year.
- Does it snow in Dehradun in December?
- Not in the city, which sits at about 650 metres. Mussoorie (2,000 metres) sees a light dusting in some years, usually in the last ten days of the month, and Dhanaulti and Kanatal at 2,300 metres get proper snow more dependably, though January is safer than December. Watch the forecast for a western disturbance and drive up the morning after it clears.
- How cold is Dehradun in December?
- Afternoons reach 19 to 22°C in the sun, nights drop to 5 to 7°C, and Mussoorie runs about 8 degrees colder with sub-zero nights on the ridge. A warm jacket, a cap and proper socks cover the valley; add gloves and a thermal layer for Mussoorie and Dhanaulti evenings.
