In short

January is Dehradun's coldest month: nights around 5°C, afternoons of clear sun at 18 to 19°C, and fog until mid-morning for the first two or three weeks. Dehradun itself gets no snow, but Mussoorie (an hour and a quarter up) sees a few snow days and Dhanaulti holds snow after every cold spell. New Year week and the Republic Day weekend (Tuesday 26 January 2027) are busy; the rest of the month is the quietest, best-value stretch of the winter. Pack thermals for the hills, a warm jacket for the valley evenings, and book your snow day as a flexible plan, not a fixed date.

January divides visitors. People who come expecting a snowy hill station are disappointed by the fog and the bare valley; people who come knowing what January is leave saying it was their favourite month. We are firmly in the second group. The valley is quiet, the afternoons are gold, the Himalayan wall is sharp on the horizon, and snow is a morning's drive away. Here is January in Dehradun as we live it, following on from our December guide.

The weather, honestly

January is the coldest month of the year. Expect nights around 5°C and afternoons of about 18 to 19°C, the figures from our month by month weather guide. The defining feature is fog: from about 20 December to mid-January it sits on the valley until 10 or 11 am most days, then burns off into a cloudless afternoon. Rain is rare, two or three short spells across the month, and each one is good news for the hills, because it falls as snow above 2,000 metres. By the last week of January the fog thins and the mornings start to feel like spring.

  • Dehradun: about 5 to 19°C, foggy mornings, sunny afternoons, dry.
  • Mussoorie and Landour: about 8 degrees colder, so nights below freezing and days in the low teens. A few snow days most Januaries.
  • Dhanaulti and Kanatal: colder again, with snow on the ground for days after each spell.
  • Forecasts: the IMD Dehradun page is the official source, and we pass on what matters on WhatsApp the week you travel.

Snow: where and when

Dehradun does not get snow; the full explanation is in Does it snow in Dehradun?. What January gives you is the best odds of the year for snow on the ridge. A typical month brings two or three cold spells. Each starts with a grey, drizzly day in the valley and ends with a brilliant morning and white hills from Mussoorie upwards. That is the morning to leave early. Mussoorie is the nearest snow and melts within a day or two; Dhanaulti, two and a half hours away, is the one to trust. The Dhanaulti and Kanatal snow day guide has the route, the timings and what to pack.

What to pack

  • A warm jacket, fleece and cap for valley mornings and evenings. In the afternoon sun a single layer is enough.
  • Thermals and gloves for Mussoorie, Dhanaulti or any evening on the ridge.
  • Shoes with grip: pavements in Mussoorie ice over in the shade, and the Landour lanes are steep.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: the winter sun is strong and snow glare is fierce.
  • Moisturiser and lip balm: January is the driest air of the year.
  • A buffer in your travel plan: fog delays morning flights at Jolly Grant and trains through Haridwar in the first half of the month.

All our homes have room heaters, winter-weight duvets and plenty of hot water; tell us on WhatsApp before check-in and the rooms will be warm when you arrive.

January 2027 dates

  • New Year weekend (Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January 2027): the last and busiest part of the Christmas rush. Mussoorie is full and ridge prices peak; the valley is the sensible place to sleep. Book this by November.
  • Lohri and Makar Sankranti (13 and 14 January 2027): bonfires on the 13th, kites and til laddoos on the 14th. A warm, local week rather than a tourist one.
  • Republic Day (Tuesday 26 January 2027): with the Monday taken off it makes a four-day weekend from Saturday 23 January, and Delhi families head for the hills. Expect Mussoorie traffic and book homes a few weeks ahead.
  • The quiet weeks (4 to 22 January): the best-value stretch of the whole winter, with empty viewpoints and the sharpest views.

Things to do in January

  • A snow day at Dhanaulti or Mussoorie on the first clear morning after a cold spell (see above).
  • Winterline sunsets from the Mussoorie ridge: the orange and violet band over the valley shows from November into January on clear evenings. Our winter guide explains it.
  • FRI in winter light: the colonnades glow in the low sun and the snow line stands behind the roofline. Timings and tickets in the FRI visitor guide.
  • Café afternoons on Rajpur Road: January is terrace weather from noon to four. Our best cafés in Dehradun has the list.
  • Winter birds at Asan Barrage: about 40 km west of the city, the wetland fills with migratory ducks and waders from November to February. Go early, with a flask.
  • Rishikesh and Haridwar: the Ganga is cold but the days are perfect for the ghats, the cafés and the aarti. See the Rishikesh day trip and the Haridwar day trip.
  • Skip the wading: Robber's Cave is a cold walk through colder water in January. Save it for March; the Robber's Cave and Sahastradhara guide explains the seasons.

Crowds, prices and where to stay

New Year week and the Republic Day weekend aside, January is the quietest month of the winter and the best value. Ridge hotels that tripled their rates for Christmas come back to earth, and the valley is calmer still. Our six homes stay at their normal rates all month, from ₹1,800 a night plus taxes for the Mountain View Studio to ₹11,479 for the 3BHK for eight (prices vary by date), each with heaters, winter duvets, a kitchen for soup nights and free parking. For a longer stay, January is also the month our monthly rates make most sense: workcation by day in a sunny valley, snow at the weekend.

January asks a little of you: a jacket, a slow morning, a flexible plan. It gives back the clearest skies of the year, the emptiest viewpoints and snow an hour away. Check live availability, then message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we will tell you honestly what the forecast is doing.

Quick answers

What is the weather like in Dehradun in January?
Cold mornings and warm afternoons. Nights fall to about 4 to 7°C, often with fog until 10 or 11 am in the first half of the month, and afternoons recover to about 18 or 19°C of clear sun. Rain is rare, two or three short spells at most, and each one usually means fresh snow on the Mussoorie ridge the next morning.
Does it snow in Dehradun in January?
Not in the city, which sits at about 640 metres. January is the best month for snow at Mussoorie, about an hour and a quarter from Rajpur Road, and at Dhanaulti and Kanatal, two to two and a half hours away, where it settles for days. Our guide to snow near Dehradun has the full picture.
Is January a good time to visit Dehradun?
Yes, if you like crisp, sunny days and do not mind cold evenings. After New Year week the valley is quiet, prices are at their lowest of the winter, the Himalayan views are sharp and a snow day is an easy outing. Avoid planning early-morning drives or flights without a buffer, because fog delays are common in the first half of the month.
What should I pack for Dehradun in January?
A warm jacket, a fleece and a cap for mornings and evenings in the valley, thermals and gloves if you are going up to Mussoorie or Dhanaulti, shoes with grip, sunglasses for snow glare, and moisturiser and lip balm for the dry air. Afternoons in Dehradun are mild enough for a single layer in the sun.
