Dehradun in November: Clear Skies, Igas Lights and the First Cold Nights
Warm afternoons, the first properly cold nights, snow peaks on the horizon and, in 2026, Diwali, Igas and Guru Nanak Jayanti all in one month. A local's guide to November in the Doon valley: weather, packing, festivals, day trips, crowds and when to book December.
In short
November in Dehradun runs from about 10°C at night to 25°C in the afternoon, with almost no rain, clear skies and the Himalayan snow peaks back on the horizon. Nights turn properly cold from mid-month and Mussoorie runs about 8 degrees colder. In 2026 Diwali falls on 8 November, so the first ten days are busy; from mid-month until the Christmas rush is the quiet, good-value window, and the time to book December.

Ask us which month we would pick for ourselves and November is always in the conversation. The monsoon is a memory, the valley is still green, afternoons are warm enough for a café terrace and the first cold nights arrive in the middle of the month. For our guests it is also the month of planning ahead, because December books up from here. Here is November in the Doon valley, as we see it from the valley floor.
What November actually feels like
Think of it as October with a sharper edge. Days run from about 10°C at night to 25°C in the afternoon, the figures in our month by month weather guide. There is almost no rain and no fog yet; that arrives after about 20 December. The first week still feels like autumn. From mid-month the nights turn properly cold, mornings need a jacket, and by the last week you want a warm layer after sunset. Skies are the clearest of the autumn, and the snow peaks stand out from the Mussoorie road nearly every morning.
- Dehradun: about 10 to 25°C, sunny, dry, cool mornings.
- Mussoorie and Landour: about 8 degrees colder than the valley, so crisp days and nights in the low single digits by late November.
- Dhanaulti and Kanatal: colder again, with frost on shady mornings. Snow is rare before late December.
- Forecasts: the IMD Dehradun page is the official source, and we pass on what matters on WhatsApp the week you travel.
What to pack
- Light layers for the day: cotton or a thin long-sleeve for the valley afternoons.
- A fleece or light jacket for mornings and evenings in Dehradun.
- A proper warm jacket, cap and gloves if you will be on the Mussoorie ridge or at Dhanaulti after dark.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses: the November sun is strong, especially at altitude.
- Moisturiser and lip balm: the air is dry.
- Walking shoes with grip for forest trails and Landour's steep lanes.
All our homes have room heaters and winter-weight duvets for the cold nights; tell us on WhatsApp before check-in and we will have the rooms warm.
Festivals in November 2026
November 2026 is unusually full. Diwali moves with the lunar calendar, and this year it lands in November rather than October, which puts three festivals into one month.
- Diwali week (6 to 11 November 2026): Dhanteras on 6 November, Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November, Govardhan Puja on 10 November and Bhai Dooj on 11 November. Paltan Bazaar and the Clock Tower glow for days beforehand. Our October guide covers how the valley does the festive season.
- Uttarakhand Foundation Day (9 November): the state was formed on 9 November 2000, and the day is a state holiday with official events in Dehradun, the capital. In 2026 it falls on the Monday straight after Diwali.
- Igas Bagwal, or Budhi Diwali: Garhwal's own Diwali, celebrated eleven days after the main festival on Harbodhni (Dev Uthani) Ekadashi, which puts it around 20 November in 2026; the state confirms the exact holiday date closer to the time. Villages light bhailo, torches of resin-rich pine swung in circles, cook pakoras and puris and honour their cattle. In the city it is quieter than Diwali, but you will see community celebrations and hear the dhol.
- Guru Nanak Jayanti and Kartik Purnima (Tuesday 24 November 2026): gurdwaras across Dehradun hold processions and langar, and Paonta Sahib, about 45 km west, is a moving place to spend it. The same full moon brings big Kartik Purnima bathing crowds to the ghats at Haridwar and Rishikesh.
- Wedding season: from Dev Uthani Ekadashi onwards the wedding season restarts across North India, so expect bands on the road and busy banquet halls on auspicious evenings.
Best things to do in November
- Mussoorie ridge views: go up early for Lal Tibba and the Landour lanes while the air is clearest, and look for Bandarpunch and the Gangotri peaks. The Mussoorie and Landour day trip guide has the route and timings.
- Winterline sunsets: from about mid-November, the band of orange and violet light over the horizon after sunset starts to show on clear evenings. The winter guide explains where to stand.
- Dhanaulti and Kanatal: deodar walks at the Eco Park, apple country, quiet roads and frosty mornings. No snow yet, but no snow-day traffic either; the Dhanaulti and Kanatal guide has the plan. Uttarakhand Tourism's Dhanaulti page lists the walks up to Surkanda Devi.
- FRI in soft light: the Forest Research Institute's lawns and colonnades are at their most comfortable in November. See our FRI visitor guide for sessions and tickets.
- Chakrata and Tiger Falls: November is one of the best months for the long run west, with the falls still flowing and the Deoban forest crisp and clear. Our Chakrata and Tiger Falls guide explains whether to stay the night.
- Tehri Lake: the reservoir is full after the monsoon and the ridge views on the way are superb. The Tehri day trip guide has both routes.
- Rajaji safaris: Rajaji's main safari zones usually reopen around 15 November after the monsoon break, so late November is the start of the jungle season. Book through the park's official booking channels.
- Treks and forest walks: dry trails, cool air and long views; our treks and nature walks guide has the shortlist.

Crowds and prices
November is a month of two halves. The Diwali week is peak season: Mussoorie's Mall Road is busy, ridge hotels charge festive rates and good homes in the valley book out early. From about 12 November to mid-December it is proper shoulder season, the quiet gap between Diwali and Christmas: thin crowds on the ridge, easy parking, no queues at Kempty or Lal Tibba, and hotels on the ridge well below their December peaks. The Gurpurab long weekend is the one blip.
That quiet stretch is when the valley makes most sense as a base. Our homes are under an hour from Mussoorie (about 35 minutes from Malsi in light traffic, 45 to 60 minutes from Canal Road), with full kitchens, free parking and self check-in from 3 PM. The Mountain View Studio at Malsi starts from 1,800 rupees a night and the 3BHK for 8 on Canal Road from 11,479 rupees; rates vary by date, and the festival weekends cost more.
A four-day November plan
- 1.Day 1, arrival: settle in by 3 PM, then drive up the Mussoorie road for sunset and, after mid-month, the first winterline. Dinner on Rajpur Road.
- 2.Day 2, Mussoorie and Landour: up by 8, Lal Tibba for the peaks, the Landour lanes and a bakery stop, down before it gets cold.
- 3.Day 3, a long day out: Dhanaulti and Kanatal for the deodar ridge, or Chakrata and Tiger Falls if you do not mind a 6 a.m. start.
- 4.Day 4, a slow valley day: FRI in the morning sun, café lunch, a bazaar walk before the drive home. See the perfect weekend guide for more ideas.
How early to book for December
November is when December gets decided. Christmas week and New Year's Eve are the year's peak on the ridge and they fill the valley too, so if your dates touch 24 December to 1 January, message us by the first week of November. For the quieter first half of December, a few weeks ahead is usually enough, though weekends still go first. Our December guide covers Christmas in Landour, New Year on the ridge and the snow question.
November rewards the guests who come after the Diwali rush: clear skies, cold nights, warm afternoons, the first winterline and the valley almost to yourself. Pack a jacket, keep an eye on the festival dates and let the valley take care of the rest. Browse all six homes when you are ready.

Quick answers
- What is the weather like in Dehradun in November?
- Dry and clear: afternoons up to about 25°C, nights falling to about 10°C, and very little rain. Nights turn properly cold from mid-November. Mussoorie, an hour up the hill, runs about 8 degrees colder, so evenings on the ridge get close to freezing by the end of the month.
- Is November a good time to visit Mussoorie?
- Yes, one of the best. After the Diwali week the crowds thin, the air is clear enough for the Bandarpunch and Gangotri group snow peaks, and the winterline starts to glow over the valley at sunset. Pack a proper jacket for the evenings; there is normally no snow yet.
- Does it snow in Dehradun or Mussoorie in November?
- Not in Dehradun, ever. Mussoorie and Dhanaulti very rarely see snow in November; the usual window is late December to February. November gives you frost on the ridge in the mornings and the clearest mountain views of the autumn instead.
