Dehradun in February: Clear Skies, the Last Snow and the First Hint of Spring
February is the month the Doon valley wakes up: the fog is gone by the second week, afternoons reach 23°C, the Himalayan views are the sharpest of the year, Mussoorie gets its last snow and the first rhododendrons open on the slopes. Weather in numbers, the 2027 dates, what to pack, what to do and why it is the best-value month to visit.
In short
February in Dehradun means lows of 8 to 10°C, highs around 23°C, and the morning fog of January gone by the second week. It is the clearest-sky month of the year for Himalayan views, the last month with a real chance of snow at Mussoorie and Dhanaulti, and the start of the rhododendron bloom on the hill. There is no long weekend in February 2027 (Basant Panchami is Thursday 11 February, Valentine's Day is Sunday 14 February), so outside Valentine's weekend the valley is quiet and homestay prices are at their lowest of the dry season. Pack a jacket for mornings and a t-shirt for afternoons.

January gets the attention because of the fog and the snow. February is the month we would quietly point a friend to. The fog lifts, the afternoons warm up, the Himalayan wall behind Mussoorie stands sharp against a blue sky, and the valley has not yet filled with the spring holiday crowds. This guide follows on from our January guide and covers the weather in numbers, the 2027 dates, what to pack, what to do and what it costs.
The weather, honestly
February is winter easing off. Expect nights of 8 to 10°C and afternoons around 23°C, the figures from our month by month weather guide, with the coldest mornings in the first week and the mildest in the last. The defining change is the fog: the grey mornings that sit on the valley from late December thin after the first week of February and are usually gone by Valentine's Day, replaced by the clearest skies of the year. Rain comes as two or three short spells, each one a cold grey day in the valley and fresh snow on the ridge above.
| January | February | March | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night low | 4 to 7°C | 8 to 10°C | 11 to 13°C |
| Day high | 18 to 19°C | about 23°C | 26 to 28°C |
| Morning fog | Most days to mid-month | First week only | None |
| Snow up the hill | Most likely month | Second most likely | Rare, high slopes only |
| Crowds | New Year, Republic Day | Valentine's weekend | Holi week |
Dehradun city figures from our weather guide; Mussoorie, an hour up the hill, runs about 8 degrees colder. See the Mussoorie and Landour weather guide for the hill's own numbers.
Snow: the last window
Dehradun does not get snow; Does it snow in Dehradun? explains why. But February is the last month with a real chance of it on the ridge. Mussoorie and Landour usually see a spell or two, melting within a day on the Mall and lasting longer on the Landour side, and Dhanaulti and Kanatal hold snow for days. Our Mussoorie and Landour weather guide has the month's numbers for the hill, and the Dhanaulti and Kanatal snow day guide has the route. The rule is the same as January: book four or five nights, tell us you want snow, and go the morning after a spell clears.
What to pack
- A warm jacket or fleece for mornings and evenings; by noon a t-shirt is enough in the valley sun.
- Thermals, gloves and shoes with grip if a hill day is on the plan.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen: the February sun is strong and the snow glare up the hill is fierce.
- Moisturiser and lip balm: the air is at its driest.
- Less buffer than January: fog delays at Jolly Grant airport fade after the first week.
February 2027 dates
- Basant Panchami (Thursday 11 February 2027): yellow everywhere, kites over the valley, and the traditional start of spring. A lovely day to be in town; not a holiday weekend.
- Valentine's Day (Sunday 14 February 2027): the one busy weekend. Mussoorie's ridge hotels fill and price up from Friday 12 February; the valley stays calm. Book a Dehradun home and drive up for the day.
- No long weekend: Republic Day falls in January and Maha Shivratri in the first week of March 2027, so the rest of February is quiet weekdays and ordinary weekends. That is the value window.
Things to do in February
- The clearest Himalayan views of the year from Mussoorie, Lal Tibba in Landour and the Mussoorie Road climb. Go in the morning; our Mussoorie and Landour day trip guide has the stops.
- A last snow day at Dhanaulti or Mussoorie after a cold spell.
- Rajaji National Park: the safari season runs through the winter and February mornings are cold, clear and good for elephants and birds. About 45 minutes from Rajpur Road.
- Winter birds at Asan Barrage: the migratory ducks are still on the wetland, 40 km west of the city, before they leave in March.
- FRI in low sun: the colonnades glow and the snow line sits behind the roofline. Timings in the FRI visitor guide.
- Café afternoons on Rajpur Road: terrace weather from noon to five. The best cafés in Dehradun has the list.
- Rhododendrons: by the last week of February the red buransh starts to open on the Mussoorie slopes; by March it is everywhere. Buy the squash in Paltan Bazaar to take home.
- Still too cold for wading: Robber's Cave is a March plan; the Robber's Cave and Sahastradhara guide explains the seasons.
Crowds, prices and where to stay
Outside Valentine's weekend, February is the quietest stretch between the winter and summer peaks, and it shows in the rates: ridge hotels drop their Christmas prices and the valley is calmer still. Our six homes stay at their normal rates, from ₹1,800 a night plus taxes (prices vary by date), each with heaters for the mornings, a kitchen, fast Wi-Fi and free parking. Couples take the Mandala 1BHK or the 1BHK on Rajpur Road; snow chasers want the Mountain View Studio at Malsi for the shortest run up the hill. For a longer stay, February is also when the monthly rates make most sense: clear-sky workcation by day, hill days at the weekend.
Staying into spring? The March guide covers the rhododendrons, Holi 2027 and the best weather of the year. February asks nothing of you but a jacket in the morning. It gives back the sharpest views of the year, the last of the snow and an empty valley. Check live availability, then message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we will tell you honestly what the forecast is doing.

Quick answers
- What is the weather like in Dehradun in February?
- Cool mornings and warm afternoons: nights of about 8 to 10°C, days around 23°C, and dry. The fog that sits on the valley in late December and January thins by the first week of February and is usually gone by the second. Two or three short rain spells are normal and each one puts fresh snow on the Mussoorie ridge.
- Is there snow in Mussoorie in February?
- Often, yes. February is the second most likely month for snow on the Mussoorie ridge after January, and Dhanaulti and Kanatal, two and a half hours from Dehradun, usually hold snow for days after each spell. It does not snow in Dehradun city itself. Plan the snow day as a window inside a longer stay rather than a fixed date.
- Is February a good time to visit Dehradun?
- One of the best. The views are the sharpest of the year, the valley is quiet after the New Year rush, prices are low, the cafés have their terraces open all afternoon, and Rajaji National Park and the Asan Barrage wetland are both in season. The only crowded days are Valentine's weekend in Mussoorie.
- What should I pack for Dehradun in February?
- A warm jacket or fleece for mornings and evenings, a t-shirt layer for the afternoon sun, sunglasses, sunscreen and moisturiser for the dry air. Add thermals, gloves and shoes with grip if you are going up to Mussoorie, Dhanaulti or Landour.
